| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Kitchen Stories |
Shortly after the Second World War, the Swedish Home Research Institute has been studying the activities of housewives in the kitchen to make them more efficient. It now proposes to do the same for Norwegian bachelor farmers. Folke (Norstrom) is one of the researchers sent to a small farm to study the behavior of stoic, silent Isak (Calmeyer) from a high chair in a corner of the farmer's kitchen. The researchers are instructed to have no contact with their subjects, so as to keep the study pure (they sleep in travel trailers outside the house), but the initial resistance and animosity cannot withstand the two older men's loneliness and isolation. This 2003 comedy is very subtle and calm; the laughs are quiet and gentle, but it's a unique twist on the traditional buddy formula.
