After their parents die in a car accident, A teen girl and her little brother are taken in by a couple who are family friends.
The girl, Ruby, learns that her parents left them a large inheritance.
Ruby is suspicious of her new guardians. She begins uncovering clues that indicate that the couple killed her parents so they could adopt them and steal their inheritance.
Ruby tries to tell her parents' lawyer and the social services lady, but the couple is always one step ahead of her. Ruby tries to escape several times, but is always caught.
Ruby begins placing phone calls and exposing some of the couple's problems. The woman loses her medical license due her drug problem and the man is exposed for fraud and his debt to a lone shark.
The woman, distraught, kills herself by overdosing.
The man locks the kids in the basement, but before he can do anything, two goons show up and take him away and their car crashes.
The kids get out and are picked up by a cop who stops to check out the crash. The man knocks the cop out and goes after the kids.
Ruby gets behind the wheel and runs him over, killing him.

After Ruby (Sobieski) and Rhett's parents die, the Glass family is appointed to be their guardians. All seems well, at first, but Ruby begins to notice disturbing things about the Glass family. She becomes more and more suspicious, especially since her parents left her and her brother with a large trust fund. Mr. Glass, who on the surface has a thriving business, seems to be having some financial difficulties, and Mrs. Glass has her own problems as well. Convinced that she and her brother are in danger, Ruby tries to collect evidence of the things she suspects, and she tries to get her and her brother away from the Glass house. Unfortunately, no one seems to believe her, and her brother is happy with his new life.
