Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Smiling Lieutenant
Lt. Niki, a charming officer in the Austrian royal guard, has a beautiful, violin-playing girlfriend Franzi. One day while marching in formation, he winks to her on the sidelines only to have Princess Anna from the fictional country Flausenshaum cross their path. Believing the wink was meant for her, the princess is smitten and orders Niki to marry her. At first continuing his love affair with Franzi, Niki and she eventually call it off. To make Niki's life more exciting, however, Franzi teaches the stuffy pricess to be a "jazz-baby" and excite her new husband beyond his expectations.
