| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Ladykillers (2004) |
Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr (Hanks), an eccentric professor, so-called, of ancient languages and much given to quoting Poe, shows up at the home of Marva Munson (Hall), a mountainous and devout widow who has a room to let. Dorr convinces her he is on sabbatical and wishes to practice early Renaissance music with some fellow musicians in her root celler. The real plan is to tunnel to the vault of the lucrative riverboat casino just down the hill. The "musicians" consist of a foul-mouthed janitor who works on the boat (Wayans), a bomb expert who suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (Simmons), a chain smoking Vietnamese tunnel expert known only as The General (Ma), and a very dim football player for their muscle (Hurst). This 2003 Coen brothers remake of the 1955 Alec Guinness/Peter Sellers comedy is odd and amusing like a Warner Brothers cartoon, but neither the Coens' nor Hanks's best work.
