| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Day of the Jackal |
The Day of the Jackal is a fictional account of attempts on French Preisident Charles DeGaulle's life. It is based on the Frederick Forsythe book of the same name. The story is set in motion when the OAS, a rebel organization consisting of vengeful veterens, decides to hire an outsiders to assassinate the French leader.
The assassin himself, portrayed by Edward Fox, is a hardened but extremely professional killer who immediately goes about planning the assassination. He gives only one moniker to his hirers: The Jackal. The majority of the movie involves the Jackal planning and preparing for the job of his lifetime.
On the other side of the law, the French National Security agency is working to stop the OAS and gets word of the sinister plot on DeGaulle's life. However, since they know next to nothing about the killer, they are hard pressed to stop the attack. As they gather clues, they employ their most proficient detective, Colonel Roland, to track down the Jackal as he comes closer and closer to his eventual goal.
