Ronald Miller (Dempsey) is tired of being a complete nerd and a nobody at school. It's his senior year and he wants to be a part of the "in" crowd so he makes a deal with head cheerleader Cindy Mancini (Petersen), one of the most popular girls in school. The deal is that he will pay her a thousand dollars if she pretends that they are dating for one month.
She says that dating her won't automatically make him popular, he says it will. Ronald proves to be correct. By the time the month is over, Ronald is chic, sought after by the other girls and accepted by the "in" crowd. This new sense of power goes to his head and Ronald turns into someone Cindy no longer recognizes or likes. After Cindy gets drunk at a New Year's Eve party and blurts out the truth about Ronald's "thousand dollar deal" his popularity disappears and he goes back to being the biggest nerd at school. This time around even the nerds who were once his friends want nothing to do with him. Ronald sees the error of his ways and realizes finally that he did it all to win the heart of Cindy. He decides to find out if it's not too late for the two of them to become a real couple.
