Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Railrodder
After reading a newspaper advertisement in the London Times about sightseeing in Canada, a man walks across the Atlantic and boards a two-seater "railrodder" (motorized railway cart) to cross the continent from ocean to ocean. Various misadventures occur along the way. Silent film star Buster Keaton soloed in this dialogue-less 1965 film when he was nearly 70 (about a year before his death) -- obligingly performing some stunts with his usual poise and dignity. The short film is not that funny, and serves partly as an ad for the Canadian National Railway. It would appeal mostly to Keaton fans or viewers with the sophistication to appreciate a sort of "Samuel Beckett on vacation" plot (such as it is), but recent Laserdisc and video versions often include a "making-of" documentary that is almost better than the film itself.
