| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sweet Bird of Youth |
Based on Tennessee Williams' play, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is a movie written and directed by Richard Brooks in 1961. Ed Begley earned the 1962 Academy award in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category and Geraldine Page and Shirley Knight earned both a nomination in the same category.
Once again, Chance Wayne comes back to Saint Cloud, Florida in order to speak to Heavenly Finley, his longtime lover. Heavenly is the daughter of Tom Finley, a wealthy politician who's been governor of the state. Chance, a barman and athletic swimmer then, fell in love with Heavenly ten years ago but Tom Finley asked him to become someone before hoping to marry Heavenly.
Since then, Chance has tried for years to break through in Hollywood by seducing with his good looks the women who could, according to him, be helpful. Now, he comes back to Saint-Cloud in the company of Alexandra Del Lago, a faded movie star living on vodka and drugs. Chance is persuaded that Alexandra will introduce him to the big shots of Hollywood.
Chance understands quickly that Tom Finley won't let him see Heavenly who has to marry the local doctor. Heavenly, a depressed young girl, has given up, over the years, the hope to see Chance becoming famous and she doesn't have the energy to contradict her dominant father.
