| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Ruby's Bucket of Blood |
Ruby Delacroix (Bassett) runs a popular rural Louisiana juke. She's in a dilemma since the band's lead singer has gone to New Orleans to record. It's the 1950s and segregation is the song of the South, which is why when Billy Dupre (Anderson), a white blues singer, offers to fill in and integrate the band it spells trouble. Ruby has trouble enough. Her protective husband Earl Delacroix (Stokes Mitchell) is going back to work on the rigs, but not before filling their daughter Emerald (Smollett) with ideas counter to those her mother is teaching her about hard work. Dupre complicates the situation further: he is also married, but miserable in a relationship with a mentally unstable woman.
Made for cable film. Winner of numerous awards including NAACP Image Award for Award Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special, presented to Angela Bassett and the Motion Picture Sound Editors, USA Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing in Television -- Music, Movies and Specials presented to music editor David Bondelevitch. The soundtrack is BLUES.
