| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Moonstruck |
Italian-American bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) was widowed some years back when her husband was killed in a bus accident. Now in her late 30s, she decides it's time to remarry and accepts the suit of nice, middle-aged Johnny Cammareri (Aiello). She doesn't really love him, but her mother Rose (Dukakis) says that's good, because love upsets everything. (Rose is well aware that her husband is having an affair.) But Johnny has to travel to Sicily to see to his ailing mother, and suddenly Loretta finds herself falling hard for his brooding, passionate younger brother Ronny (Cage), who works the ovens in a bakery and has only one hand. This marvelously romantic 1987 hit features great dialogue, fine acting (watch for John Mahoney as a middle-aged prof who can't keep away from his students but is nevertheless taken by Rose), and a soundtrack in which Puccini's "La Boheme" and Dean Martin battle for supremacy.
