| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Ugetsu |
UGETSU, sometimes known as "Tales of a Pale and Mysterious Moon After the Rain" is a Japanese movie directed by Kenji Mizoguchi in 1953. Silver Lion of the 1953 Venice Film Festival.
The war is coming everyday closer to this small town of the Japanese country. For Genjuro and Tobei don't think it's so bad. Genjuro, a craftsman, hopes to sell more merchandise during this period and Tobei's obsession is to become a samurai. They decide to abandon their respective wives for a few days in order to reach the nearest city.
There, Tobei has the opportunity to appear as the one who's killed a general of the enemy army. He's then held in high regard and has at least fulfilled his dream. His friend Genjuro falls in love with a beautiful princess who keeps him in her family manor.
But every dream has its hidden facet. When Tobei comes back home, he discovers that his wife, who's been raped by soldiers, has been forced to become a courtesan in order to survive. And Genjuro will finally understand that his princess is nothing more than a ghost. He'll return home only to discover that his faithful wife has been killed during the battle.
