| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mahanagar - The Big City |
Mahanagar (metroplois), in Bengali, directed by Satyajit Ray is a commentary on the travails of a working woman in the Indian middle class. Set in Calcutta of the 1960s, the protagonist Arati(Madhabi Mukherjee) marries into a traditional Bengali joint family which is hard pressed for money. In order to support her husband Bhombal(Anil Chatterjee), Arati gets a job, but not without antagonizing her inlaws, who want her to stay a homemaker. However, things take an about turn when Bhombal loses his job and Arati becomes the sole bread earner of the family - leading to frequent ego clashes with her husband. Meanwhile, in office Arati befriends Edith, a liberal European lady, who is disliked by her conservative boss. When Edith is dismissed on concocted moral grounds, Arati must decide whether to keep working - because of her family constraints - or to stand up for her friend with the knowledge that, in the big city there shall be another opportunity.
