Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Murder in the First
Henri Young (Bacon) is a petty criminal sent to Alcatraz in the 1930s. When he commits an infraction, he is put in solitary confinement. The maximum stay for this confinement is supposed to be relatively brief, but Young spends years alone, cold and in complete darkness, precipitating dementia, leaving him near madness. When he commits murder, it's up to James Stamphill (Slater), a young attorney, to piece together Young's life story and prevent the system from exacting the death penalty against his client.
