| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Grace of My Heart |
Growing up in the 1950s, nice girls didn't have careers. Especially careers in music, but that's what Edna Buxton (Douglas) wants. She can't make it as a singer, so she chooses to write the songs instead. She changes her name to Denise Waverly and leaves town to make it. Next stop: The Brill Building. Grace of My Heart follows Edna/Denise from the 1950s forward in time and through love and loss with a series of lover-collaborators (Stolz, Davison), through her commune experience with Guru Dave (Peter Fonda), the 1970s and (FINALLY!) the making of her very own album. The characters she meets include Jay Phillips (Dillon), a Brian Wilson-esque tragic figure. The only constant in her life, other than change, is her devoted agent Joel Millner (Turturro).
There are lots of real-life parallels in the film. See if you can figure them out for yourself. If you do, perhaps the earth will move under your feet.
An Allison Anders film with some brilliant insider casting including Chris Isaak, J. Macis, Jill Sobule and more.
