| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969) |
An aging teacher at an English all-boys' school reflects on his years as a Latin teacher as he prepares to retire. The crusty Mr. Arthur Chipping (O'Toole) remembers those students who seemed to get under his skin and he theirs. He especially remembers his wonderful romance and eventual marriage to a beautiful, vivacious chorine named Katharine (Clark) with whom it seemed impossible – because of class prejudices and agism – to have a lasting relationship. She utterly transformed his life (which the viewer sees very vividly and hears in song.). And he remembers the horrors of World War II and how it changed his life and the surrounding community.
Musical based on the James Hilton novel. There was also a 1939 film based on the same book.
