| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Beguiled |
During the civil war, a wounded union soldier, in confederate territory, collapses at the gate of a women's finishing school. The girls take him in and nurse him back to health, hiding him from confederate troops until he's well enough to be turned in. Many of the girls become smitten with the handsome man and he has his pick of the litter.
When he refuses to go to the head mistress' room, choosing another girl's room instead, she pushes him down the stairs, breaking his leg. Instead of fixing it, she cuts it off to punish him for not choosing her.
A shy teacher takes care of him and they fall in love and plan to marry. However, before they can announce their plans to the other girls, the girls prepare a special meal. They give the man a batch of poisoned mushrooms, killing him very quickly. The girls carry his body into the woods and bury him without sympathy.
