| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Nine 1/2 Weeks |
This is an erotic story about a relationship purely based on sexual pleasure and nothing else. Smooth, supremely confident, bordering on arrogant, financier John (Rourke) meets and quickly sets about to seduce Manhattan art dealer Elizabeth (Basinger) who first hesitates and then willingly gives in to his advances. John entices her with expensive presents, sweet endearments, perfectly timed flower deliveries and then makes sure that the sex they engage in is anything but ordinary. They make love in the rain and inside the clock tower of a tall building.
Hhe blindfolds her while he feeds her and then proceeds to run an ice cube over her body, he makes her crawl across the floor to him etc. One night Elizabeth dresses up like "one of the guys" and the two go out on the town and end up being chased in the street after baiting gay bashers, and end up making fast, furious love in an alley. John is a man of few words and spurns Elizabeth's attempts to get to know him better. Eventually Elizabeth cannot take any more of John's lack of emotional sharing and decides to leave. At last she realizes that there is a big difference between love and sex and she is no longer willing to accept only sex. She wants more but cannot get what she needs fom John on a long term basis.
