| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sergeant York |
Alvin C. York finds a local girl he is interested in courting, Gracie Williams (Leslie). But York's conduct catches up with him. One night, he has a conversion experience while in a storm. York seeks the guidance of his local pastor (Brennan), with whom he studies the Bible and discusses life. York's new Christian beliefs run counter to the idea of war, which the United States has just entered. York is drafted and has to reconcile his convictions with his duty to country. He tries to become a conscientious objector. This is made even more difficult because he is one of the best marksmen his commanding officer (Ridges) has ever seen. After being given a leave and a book on United States history to mull over, York decides he should go into combat, and is in the trenches when he eliminates a snipers' nest and captures more than 100 prisoners with his comrades. He returns home a celebrated, but reluctant hero.
The cast includes Ward Bond and Noah Beery Jr., and also features a young June Lockhart and young Dickie Moore as York's siblings.
