| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Hatari |
John Wayne (Sean Mercer) heads a business in Africa which captures wild animals to sell to zoos. The business was run by his friend who was killed by a rhinocerus and is now owned by the friend's daughter, Brandy (Michele Girardon). At the start of the movie a rhinocerus gores another of the hunters, the Indian (Bruce Cabot), and they must hire a new person. A zoo in Switzerland has sent a photographer to cover the capture of the animals it needs, but the group is surprised and unhappy when the photographer turns out to be a woman who they nickname Dallas (Elsa Martinelli). A woman a on wild animal hunts is sure to be a problem.
During the movie, the hunters chase and capture giraffes and other animals, Dallas adopts more than one baby elephant, Pockets (Red Buttons), a New York cab driver, devises a plan to capture hundreds of monkeys (a comic highlight), and the group must decide whether to again attempt to capture a rhino. A romance between Sean and Dallas begins repeatedly, but is always interrupted by a person or animal. The musical score by Henry Mancini is excellent.
