Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Rocky IV
While doing something mysterious in the pool with his dogs, Carl Weathers decides to challenge Ivan Drago, a seven foot tall Commie, to a boxing match, inviting his former rival Rocky Balboa to train him. Apollo insists that he is in the best shape of his career, and is unstoppable. So you can imagine his surprise when the Red bastard beats him to death.

Rocky resolves to avenge Apollo's death, and does so by cruising around in his Trans Am to a Survivor song, and climbing Russian mountains to Survivor songs. His training complete, Rocky steps into the ring to knock Communism flat on it's red ass. All to a Soundtrack by Survivor.

Rocky Balboa is set in life. He has it "all." But his friend Apollo Creed (played by Carl Withers) is the former champ, beaten by Rocky in Rocky III. He wants to make a comeback. While he is reading the paper he reads about this giant Russian who is "in town" to demonstrate in an exhibition boxing match, his Russian superiority over an American fighter. What he really wants is to fight Rocky in a real fight. But he accepts Apollo Creed's challenge to an "Exhibition" fight. But during the fight the Russian literally beats Creed to death in front of his wife, trainer, Rocky and the crowd.

This angers Rocky who accepts the challenge to "go to Russia and fight the Giant on his own turf," which he does. His bro in law Paulie and Apollo's surrogate father and trainer go along, but "Adrian" does not. She is terrified that she will lose Rocky and the Giant Russian will kill him in the ring just like he did Apollo. She yells at Rocky before he leaves that "You can't win! But Rocky responds that he is a fighter and that he cannot change who and what he is. But she won't hear it. So he says goodbye to his son and heads for Russia.

He asks for a training camp, supposedly a Russian farm in Siberia (actually it was filmed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, but while you are watching the film you believe that you are looking at the snow covered Siberia). The camera pans back and forth between the Giant Russian in his high tech gym, with his high tech workout equipment and steroid injections, and Rocky doing manual labor and using farm equipment and other rough equipment to do his workout. rocky grows a beard during his training time and runs in the snow, etc. Finally, "Yo Adrian" shows up and pledges her undying support regardless of the outcome and pledges her undying love, even if he dies fighting the Soviet Monster. This is all Rocky needs and he throws himself into the training 120 %.

Finally, the night comes, obviously (supposedly) in Moscow with the Soviet President Gorbachev and all the others looking on. The arena is packed. It is probably Madison Square Garden. The Soviet Super Boxer comes out and is cheered loudly. When Rocky, The Italian (Amereican) Stallion comes out in his Red, White and Blue fighting outfit he is booed viciously.

The finale is awesome: The fight begins with Rocky getting hammered by the giant, but never quitting. As a result he is pounded mercilessly, but never quits. He just gets up and keeps on coming back again and again. Eventually his endurance and determination wears the giant boxer down and Rocky rocks his world with his relentless blows, winning the fight. About half way through the fight the Russian crowd begins to cheer for Rocky and at the end they are totally on his team, celebrating his enduring spirit.

Rocky's speech at the end was "People can Change." He tells the crowd that he felt their hate when he arrived but he saw them change. And that if two people can change then everyone can change and care more for one another.

A big Russian Boxer is in town who answers to the name of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and is projected to be an invincible "creation" of Russian sports machinery. An exhibition boxing event is arranged in which Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) comes out of retirement to fight the Russian Giant. But the American crowd - and Rocky - to their horror, watch Drago slaughter Apollo and mercilessly clobber him to death. Rocky(Stallone) vows to avenge the death of his friend and sets up a match with Drago. Training under extreme Siberian conditions, Rocky prepares for this fight which is to be held in Russia.
