| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Consenting Adults |
When Eddie Otis(Spacey) and his wife Catherine (Rebecca Miller) move into the neighbourhood, they lend a spark to the lives of their next door couple Richard (Kevin Kline) and Priscilla Parker (Mastrantonio). Richard - a gifted musician - is mesmerized by the Catherine's beauty and her stirring rendition of the blues, while Eddie appeals to Priscilla with his resourcefulness in matters more worldly.
Eddie's vileness surfaces for the first time, when he proposes wife swapping - in the middle of the night and without the women being actually aware. Some initial hesitation and a fallout later, Richard bites the bait. But when Catherine is found clubbed to death, Eddie pins Richard for the murder. To put the final nail in the coffin, Priscilla asks for divorce.
When Richard gets out on bail, he runs into insurance detective David Duttonville (Forest Whitaker) who informs him that Eddie had taken out a suspiciously high insurance policy on Catherine and had set up new business venture with Priscilla. As Richard, with Duttonville's help, searches for ways to prove his innocence, he realizes that Eddie had made him the pawn in an evil plan.
