| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Together |
Liu Xiaochun (Tang), is a pre-teen violin prodigy who lives in a small town with his father, Liu Cheng (Liu). They try to see what opportuntiy lies ahead for him in Beijing. The father takes his life's savings that he has accumulated as a cook and they embark on this journey. Once in the city, they have to find a private teacher to establish residency and to begin working toward his dream of musical fame and fortune. Soon, a teacher is found -- Professor Jiang (Wang), a broken man who lives alone with his cats and his dirty laundry strewn about. As they are settling into life in Beijing, Xiaochun becomes acquainted and infatuated with a beautiful 20-something neighbor named Lili (Hong), whose profession is a tad dubious.
The day comes when Xiaochun's father realizes his son must have a world-class teacher. While making a delivery, he encounters Yu Shifeng (Kaige). Jiang understands there is little he can do and bids his student farewell.
With a new teacher in a still strange city, Xiaochun is forced to contemplate the meaning of success and family in his life. He also hasn't fully realized the sacrifices his father has made in an attempt to give him a better life.
