Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Backbeat
This film is a biopic of "The Beatles". But it chronicles the times much before Beatlemania set in and when the "Fab Four" were actually five - including John Lennon's closest friend - the supremely talented Stuart Sutcliffe.
The film commences with their journey from Liverpool to Hamburg. The Beatles start playing in the then obscure joint called "The Star Club" and thier popularity grows with each performance - especially among the opposite sex. Early renditions of some classic beatles numbers are the highlight of this period.

Meanwhile Stuart, who also seriously dabbles in art, falls in love with a German Painter Astrid Kirchherr (Interestingly, it was Astrid who gave Stuart the haircut which was later adopted and came to be known as "The Beatles Cut"). As it turns out, on their second trip to Hamburg, Stuart decides to forsake Rock'n'Roll to start a new life in Germany with his girlfriend. John, George, Paul and Pete Best (the Beatles drummer before Ringo) returned to Liverpool in 1961. Stuart Sutcliffe died in April 1962, a day before the Beatles were to arrive for thier third Hamburg trip. Thus ended a rarely discussed chapter in the history of the Beatles.
