A hot shot New York publicist's life unravels when his wife of less than a year dies giving birth to their daughter. The publicist, Ollie, counts on his dad in New Jersey to help with his daughter, Gertie.
When Ollie is forced to take Gertie to a press conference with him he's stressed out and makes some derogatory comments about his client and the reporters and he's abruptly fired.
Ollie and Gertie move in with his dad and Ollie gets a job with his dad working for the city as maintenance men for the next 7 years.
One night Ollie meets a girl, Maya, the cashier at a video store that he and Gertie frequent and they become friends and a little more.
After years of failed interviews with PR firms one of Ollie's old friends gets him a job with his firm. He makes plans to move back to New York and put Gertie in a private school. However, Gertie doesn't want to leave and his dad and Maya don't want them to leave.
Ollie thinks only of himself when he blows off Gertie's school play for a meeting. However, just before the meeting he talks about family life with another man waiting for a meeting. Ollie realizes he'd rather be with Gertie, Maya and his father than in New York. He hurries back to Jersey just in time to take part in Gertie's play.

The main character (Afleck) struggles with life after he loses his wife (Jennifer Lopez) during child birth. He moves back in with his father (George Carlin), along with his newborn daughter. While dealing with his wife's death, he looses his job at a PR firm and tests his father's patience. He soon meets a video store clerk (Liv Tyler), and becomes involved with her which results in a long-term romance in the end. He discovers that he can live a "peaceful, wholesome life" in this small town with his father and new-found friends. He also re-establishes his relationship with his father and daughter.
