| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Shade |
Vernon (Townsend) is young mechanic -- a card sharp who is able to manipulate the deck -- who is working as a grifter. The team who has recruited him to help them cheat at high stakes private poker games are Charlie Miller (Byrne) and the beautiful Tiffany (Newton). They will do almost any scam to make a buck. But it becomes increasingly unclear as to who's scamming who. Vernon eventually gets the opportunity to unseat The Dean (Stallone), the best mechanic in the country who may be retiring from the circuit.
The story is superbly entertaining and the cast is magnificent. It shows the fine line that exists between magicians and professional card sharps. Casting well into the so-called smaller roles is great with a supporting cast including Hal Holbrook, Charles Rocket, Dina Merrill, and Michael Dorn. (There was one irritating guy who looked like The Rock's younger brother and was trying to affect Christopher Walken. Didn't work.)
If you like a good tale with lots of fast moving, sleight of hand storytelling and action, then this is your film.
