| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Bread and Chocolate |
Nino Garofolo (Manfredi), a working-class Italian immigrant, tries to find a place for himself in cool and methodical Switzerland. Although he tries to hide his Italian background, Nino flops as a waiter, and even as an employee of a chicken-plucking farm. But he is determined to succeed, no matter how bad his situation gets. Nino meets many people of different nationalities in much the same fix, from Elena (Karina), a Greek teacher trying to raise her musical prodigy of a son, to an Italian magnate (Dorelli) who has some shady plans for Nino. This 1973 Italian film is multilingual -- there are German, Greek, Italian, and Turkish characters -- and mostly charming.
