| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Human Stain |
Based on the Philip Roth novel, THE HUMAN STAIN is a film directed by Robert Benton in 2003.
Coleman Silk is a sixty-something classics professor compelled to quit the university after an inauspicious disagreement with his colleagues. He soon falls in love with Faunia Farley, a young woman with a charged past. Her two children have died victims of an accidental fire and Faunia's mentally disturbed ex-husband doesn't stay away from her.
Coleman, helped by a few Viagra pills, knows that he's enjoying, with Faunia, his last love. He ignores the advices of his friend Nathan Zuckerman and the anonymous letters sent by some politically correct members of the local community. But is the old professor ready to tell Faunia that he comes from an Afro-American family and that his whole life was nothing but a long lie?
--Daniel Staebler, Resident Scholar

Anthony Hopkins is a college professor forced to resign from his position over a ridiculous, overblown charge of racism. The movie explores his real identity and his relationship with the rough, sexual, and enigmatic Faunia Farley, whose ex-husband – a violent Vietnam war veteran – stalks her.
--Esther, Resident Scholar
