| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Quiet American |
In one of the best performances of his career, Michael Caine plays the world-weary British journalist, Thomas Fowler, who is covering the struggles between the French and Vietnamese in the 1950s, as well as the increasing American influence in Indochina. He has always committed to a stance of neutrality, of not taking any sides, and finds solace only in his young Vietnamese mistress, Phuong, who does not love him but relies upon the security that he offers.
Fowler's personal life is disrupted by the appearance of the infuriatingly idealistic and optimistic Alden Pyle, a young American whose role in Vietnam's struggles are not so benign. When Pyle falls in love with Phuong and threatens to take her away – and when Fowler discovers the true nature of Pyle's presence in Vietnam – the formerly neutral journalist is unwillingly roused to action and must make a few fateful decisions.
