| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Mirror Has Two Faces |
Rose is an English Literature professor at Columbia University who lives a very fulfilling life in all but one respect – she considers herself the ugly duckling of her family and does not have a successful love life. After she meets Gregory, a math professor, she feels that she's falling in love, but Gregory has serious issues when it comes to relationships. He's had some bad experiences in the past, where he's been infatuated with women who've wanted him only for sex, and so with Rose he's determined to act differently. He wants their relationship to remain platonic, and when after several weeks of dating he asks for her hand in marriage, he lets her understand that their marriage will be one based purely on friendship and companionship, without sex to complicate matters. Rose, who knows that she isn't getting any younger (and probably won't be getting further marriage proposals), consents, even though her more romantic side balks at this. For a while their arrangement works, until Rose's amorous needs overtake her and threaten the perfectly platonic life she's been living with Gregory.
Frustrated that her husband can't seem to get attracted to her, Rose must learn to value her own appearance. Part of this problem is resolved by confronting her mother, a beautiful woman who has contributed to her daughter's self-esteem and image problems. After learning not to accept second best for herself, Rose makes herself over both on the inside and out. Will Gregory still keep his resolve?
