| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Auto Focus |
“I don't drink, I don't smoke. Two out of three ain't bad,” justifies actor Bob Crane (Kinnear) of his sex addiction which began during the five-season success of his 1960's title role, “Hogan's Heroes.” A photography enthusiast and successful deejay, Crane accepts his pivotal TV role and meets creepy video maven, John “Carp” Carpenter (Dafoe). Carp sells VCR prototypes to the stars and enthralls Crane with a home unit. Before long, the promiscuous “Carp” shows Crane how videotaping sex scenes is more fun than videotaping his family whom he loses when his wife finds some naughty stills in the garage. His next wife, the blond "Hogan Hero" Hilda (Bello) is more accepting, but by this time Crane is broke and reduced to dinner theatre engagements and groveling to his agent (Leibman) that his known Hollywood lifestyle should have nothing to do with the scarcity of available roles. Following a believable “breakup” scene where Crane insists to Carp he'll “re-invent his career,” Crane is bludgeoned to death in an Arizona motel room, a crime which goes unsolved as the hanger-on Carp is acquitted.
