| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Hunchback of Notre Dame |
Because this is a Disney movie, do not expect the utter tragedy of the Victor Hugo novel, though this movie is not without its sadness.
Quasimodo is the hunchback bell-ringer of Notre Dame. He is very faithful to the priest and judge, Claude Frollo, who took him in as a child despite the deformity of his appearance and the fact that he could not move very well. Frollo is a sinister figure, and is currently plotting to rid Paris of all gypsies.
Quasimodo ordinarily would not have interfered with his master's plans, but he happens to fall in love with the most beautiful gypsy girl, Esmeralda. Unfortunately, Frollo has laid eyes on the girl as well, and - although he is still committed to his plan of getting rid of the gypsies – he secretly lusts after Esmeralda and hopes she will be his mistress. When Quasimodo manages to save Esmeralda from one of the plots that Frollo hatched to capture her, she becomes his friend, though she does not love him back - her heart is with Captain Phoebus, a resplendent blonde soldier who is far more handsome than the squat hunchback. Though Quasimodo knows that Esmeralda will never love him, will he still defy Frollo and continue saving her from the wicked man's machinations?
