| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone |
Karen Stone (Mirren) is an actress whose youth is fading. Her husband is also not well, and they decide, after she flops as Juliette on Broadway, to go on vacation. He dies. She is left drifting in Rome with no real friends or support system. Stone calls upon The Contessa (Bancroft) to try and have tea with someone -- even if that someone is someone she barely knows. The Contessa arranges for Mrs. Stone to date a series of young men. Unbeknownst to her, these young men are essentially gigalos who give The Contessa a cut of funds they are given by their older escorts. Stone is about to give up when she meets Paolo (Martinez). She continues to struggle with her loss of beauty, but Paolo doesn't seem to care about that. Is he more interested in her bank account or her?
This movie was adopted for Showtime from the Tennessee Williams book.
