| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Kind Hearts and Coronets |
Louis Mazzini (played by Dennis Price) is the son of an Italian singer and a British woman of the aristocratic d'Ascoyne family. The d'Ascoyne family disowned his mother after she eloped with the Italian, so instead of enjoying the riches and privileges that should rightly be his, Louis lives a life of low income and limited opportunity. Had his mother remained in favor with the family, he would have been in line to inherit the crowning position of the d'Ascoyne family - an illustrious dukedom.
Two events turn his resentment towards the d'Ascoyne family into an urge to murder. First, a childhood friend refuses his offer of marriage because she thinks he's too poor; secondly, when his mother dies, the d'Ascoynes refuse to bury her in the family vault. Louis then sets out to murder all the d'Ascoynes standing between himself and the dukedom.
This is a comedy because all of the d'Ascoynes that Louis intends to murder - including Lady Agatha d'Ascoyne – are played by Alec Guinness! And none of these d'Ascoynes, from the stupid clergyman to the blowhard general to the tactless duke, intend to give Louis an easy time in disposing of them.
