| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Icicle Thief |
This is a film-within-a-film comedy that is reminiscent of Woody Allen's THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO. An Italian filmmaker named Maurizio Nichetti (played by the real Maurizio Nichetti, the movie's writer/director) made THE ICICLE THIEF, a homage to the post-WWII classic THE BICYCLE THIEF. Nichetti is at a television studio in Milan, to make sure that the first network broadcast of his film proceeds without a hitch.
We soon become privy to action on four different planes: the black-and-white narrative of THE ICICLE THIEF, in which a poor Italian family tries to cope with poverty; the television studio, where Nichetti becomes increasingly angry at commercial interruptions; the home of a well-to-do Milanese family watching the film on their living room television set; and the commercials that keep interrupting the film. Soon, the four realms start to bleed into one another, leading to bizarre interactions between real people and movie characters.
