| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Hot Rock |
Career criminal John Archibald Dortmunder (Robert Redford) leaves prison with every intention of going straight. After all, after two strikes, one more conviction and he's down for the count.
Dortmunder literally hasn't gotten out of sight of the prison, however, when he's met by Andy Kelp (George Segal), a neurotic locksmith and burglar who also happens to be Dortmunder's half-brother.
Soon, Kelp has convinced Dortmunder to go to work for articulate African diplomat Dr. Amusa (Moses Gunn), who wants them to steal a large diamond from a New York museum. The stone is sacred to the doctor's people, and he wants to make sure that it doesn't fall into the hands of a rival nation.
With the help of oddball criminals like a getaway man (Ron Leibman) who knows more about the streets of New York than AAA and a former campus radical (Paul Sand) with a yen for explosives, Dortmunder and Kelp execute a nearly flawless heist of the museum. Nearly.
When things go wrong, the gang of miscreants are forced to steal the stone again and again, from a state prison, a police station, and the most secure bank in the city of New York.
