Our Man In Havana is a light hearted and satirical tale of political espionage and intrigue in pre-Castro Cuba. Jim Wormold (Guiness) is selling vacuum cleaners in Havana before being enlisted by a fellow Brit named Henry Hawthorne (Coward) to spy on Cuba for England! Hawthorne is comical as the hardly "undercover" spy in showy suits and with an outrageous manner. After almost two decades in Cuba, Wormold is very reluctant to take on the assignment but does so for the sake of his 17 year-old daughter Milly's (Morrow) financial future. He fabricates coded reports of military installations by tracing vacuum cleaner parts, falsifies expenses accounts, and submits lists of fictitious operatives and informants. His only friend in Havana is Dr. Hasselbacher (Ives). Things get really complicated when the home office in London is impressed with his efforts and sends him a secretary named Beatrice (O'Hara). Extremely troubling for Wormold is his daughter's erstwhile suitor, Captain Segura (Kovacs); the feared local police captain who has a penchant for torturing suspects. He and Beatrice are falling in love. Wormold is nearly poisoned and then forced to shoot a man in self-defense. His cover as a vacuum salesman is no longer good enough to keep him out of trouble with the Cubans or with the British Secret Service. He is forced back to London to come clean about his deception.
