| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Tower of London |
In Medieval England, Edward IV (Hunter) stole the crown from King Henry VI (Mander). His son Henry is exiled to France, while Edward has the deposed monarch thrown into the notorious Tower of London. Edward's brother Richard (Rathbone) has Lord DeVere decapitated by the sinister Mord the executioner (Karloff). After Richard's victory at Tewkesbury over the Prince of Wales he has Mord execute the former King Henry. For his victory over the Prince, Edward rewards Richard with a large share of land once possessed by the Duke of Clarence (Price) as well as the hand of the Prince's widow. Mord again does Richard's bidding, killing the Duke of Clarence.
Later when Edward is in ailing health, he proclaims Richard as Protector of the Crown; the intermediary is to act in place of the monarchy until Edward's young heirs can lay claim to the throne. Instead, Richard has Mord kill both of the young men. Edward's widow Elyzabeth (O'Neil) schemes to steal the Royal Treasury in order to finance a military overthrow of Richard. John Wyatt (Sutton) is captured and tortured by Mord but will not talk. He escapes and joins young Henry, back from France, in the defeat of Richard's army. As a result, Richard is killed by Henry as Mord dies in battle by Wyatt. Wyatt marries Lady Barton (Grey) and Henry ascends to the throne as the rightful heir.
