| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about MacArthur |
This movie is about the professional life of Douglas MacArthur, the military commander of the Allied Forces during World War II and Korea. He is forced to withdraw from The Philippines to the safety of Australia but vows to return. He is frustrated at having to lobby the President and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to win approval of his plan before making the heroic push forward to the very shores of Japan before the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He accepts the surrender of Emperor Hirohito by the Japanese military command and Japanese Foreign Minister on board the USS Missouri. He delivers a speech on the evils of war.
Eventually, he is relieved of command by President Truman when differences arise in their ideologies about the Korean conflict the potential for a war with China. Much like his tank squadron commanding counterpart in the European Theater of Operation (ETO), Gen. George S. Patton, MacArthur will not tolerate cowardice, he will sacrifice thousands to gain victory, he is courageous in the face of enemy fire, and he failed as a leader due to an inability to understand the politics involved in the new order that emerges from the end of World War II.
