| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sounder |
Sounder is the story of a sharecropping family in rural Louisiana. It is the depression and times are especially difficult for Nathan Morgan (Winfield) and his family; wife Rebecca (Tyson), oldest son David Lee (K. Hooks), son Earl (E. Hooks), daughter Josie Mae (Jarrell), and hunting dog Sounder. The Morgans, like most poor blacks in the rural south were treated badly, with numerous slights, injuries, provocations, and prejudices administered by the local sheriff, prison guards, neighbors, their landowner, and others. Things become so desperate that Nathan must steal a ham from a neighbor to keep his family from starving. He is caught and put on a prison work gang.
In the course of the film Sounder, a valued family pet, hunting dog, and companion, is hit by a shotgun blast cruelly fired by Sheriff Young (Best). Sounder runs off, it is believed, to its death. David sets out to find his father and happens upon a school for black children. He comes away with a strong message of personal integrity and pride, as well as books and an invitation to return and study. As the movie progresses, both Nathan and Sounder make tearfully triumphant returns to the family home.
