| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Left Luggage |
This drama is set in Antwerp during the early '70s. It chronicles the coming of age of a college student, Chaya, who takes a job tending to the five children of an Orthodox Jewish family, the Kalmans. Chaya is well aware of being Jewish herself, as her parents are Holocaust survivors whose lives are ruled by the past. (The film's title refers to emotional baggage as well as actual luggage.) However, Chaya comes from an assimilated family, so it takes her time to come to terms with the religious strictures that rule in the Kalman household. What Chaya cannot accept, however, is Mr. Kalman's dogmatic demeanor. She is especially frustrated that he doesn't appreciate the time she devotes to one of her charges, a developmentally slow, five-year-old boy who has never spoken a word.
