| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Romancing the Stone |
Romance novelist Joan Wilder (Turner) is summoned from NYC to South America to bring a ransom for her kidnapped sister. The sister has enclosed a map which got her husband killed. Joan travels by bus along a remote mountain road in the jungles of Columbia. The bus breaks down and she is now on foot. She meets up with exotic bird trafficker Jack Colton (Douglas). When coerced with a large reward, he helps her by throwing away her luggage and leading her down from the mountain. They get caught in a rainstorm, fired on by bandits, washed out by a mudslide and smoke some pot from a downed drug smuggling airplane they happen upon.
The two Americans are tailed by Ralph (DeVito) and Ira, two bumbling but potentially dangerous crooks who are trying to find what is on the map. They find their way into town and clean up before making contact with Joan's sister. They realize it is the map that has been sought and it shows the location of a large gemstone. Jack and Joan face the evil Zolo (Ojeda) who is out to kill them all. After the stone is found it is lost to a crocodile in the lagoon. Zolo's hand goes with the croc. Jack goes after the stone while the sisters are reunited. After Joan has returned home, Jack shows up in NYC with a beautiful new boat and wins her love.
