| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Taming of the Shrew |
Adapted from the Shakespeare classic comedy of love, manners, and marital obedience, The Taming of the Shrew is set in 17th century Padua, Italy. Petruchio (Burton) is a wealth-seeking suitor of modest fortune who consents to marry the disagreeably tempered but pleasing to the eye Catarina “Kate” (Taylor). She is the eldest daughter of Baptista (Hordern) and her marriage must happen before her younger sister, the fair and sweet Bianca (Pyne), may wed. So foul is her personality that the entire town wishes to have Kate wed and gone, so there is a lot riding on the match between the strong-willed pair.
A boozy Petruchio sets out to break Kate's fiery personality by claiming nothing is good enough for his beloved, smashing plates and throwing food on the floor, rending dresses and destroying bedroom furniture. In so doing, Kate winds up with nothing to eat, drink, wear or inhabit in her new abode. She is forced come to the aid of servants beaten by Petruchio. She must defend the integrity of goods and services provided to the manor. Cunningly, Petruchio has worn her down and finds she is now a most agreeable bride as her sister takes advantage of her amorous suitor, Lucentio (York).
