| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Washington Square |
WASHINGTON SQUARE is a film based on the Henry James novel and directed by Agnieszka Holland in 1997.
Dr. Austin Sloper's wife died while giving birth to Catherine. The young girl has dedicated her life to her father until the day she meets Morris Townsend, a good-looking young man who is unemployed. The doctor is persuaded that Morris is flirting with his daughter with the hope to take advantage of the Sloper's fortune. But Catherine has deeply fallen in love with Morris and the young man seems sincere.
In order to separate out the two lovers, the doctor sails to Europe with Catherine and comes back only after a year. Meanwhile, Morris has waited for Catherine's return in the company of Lavinia Penniman, Austin's sister. The affectionate relation between Catherine and her father has now come to an end as the young woman has decided to marry Morris without her father's consent. But when Morris learns that Catherine shall be disowned if she does so, he prefers to leave her.
