Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Stage Beauty
In the 1600s, women were banned from appearing in live theatrical productions; thus men undertook both male and female parts. Thanks to both his "beauty" and his talent, real-life thespian Ned Kynaston (Crudup) is the most celebrated leading "lady" on the London stage. Then the king, at the behest of his mistress, decrees that only women can portray female characters. Since he's been playing women for so long, Ned has forgotten what it's like to be a man, so almost overnight, he's jobless. What hurts the most, though, is that his replacement is his former dresser, Maria (Danes, portraying a fictional character), who has long dreamt of an acting career.
