| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Love Story |
Jennifer (Ali MacGraw, at the time Mrs. Robert Evans)is a smart alec Cliffie (studying at Radcliffe), from a lower-middle-class Italian-American family. She becomes involved with a Oliver (Ryan O'Neal), a blueblood at Harvard Law School. While Jenny's dad approves of their relationship, Oliver's haughty father tells his son he'll disown him if he marries Jenny. The couple decides to brave a few years of poverty (until Oliver earns his law degree) and marry. Their temporary penury is highly romanticized, e.g., they make do with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead of steak. The two of them also squabble and make up from time to time, in one case leading to the delivery of the famous albeit sappy line, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." However, a debilitating factor eventually creeps into their relationship, which they cannot shrug off so glibly.
