| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about All That Jazz |
This 1979 musical takes a thinly veiled autobiographical peek at the life of famed dancer/choreographer/director Bob Fosse.
Roy Scheider plays Joe Gideon, Fosse's cinematic alter ego. Joe is obsessed with the editing of a film he's making, a la Fosse's own 1974 movie, Lenny. He also staging a new Broadway show, and we see him having to walk a fine line between injecting the production with a strong dose of creativity and having to please his traditionalist backers. In addition, Joe juggles the many women in his life, including his ex-wife and daughter, long-time girlfriend, and bedmate du jour.
To cope with the stress in his life, Joe drinks and pops pills. In a series of hallucinatory dreams, his guardian angel (an ethereal Jessica Lange) warns him to ease up on his self-destructive behavior or he'll die. Does Joe heed her admonititions, or does he end up like Fosse himself, who would succumb to a heart attack a few years after making this film?
