Felix (Tim Curry) organizes a group of friends who are all stuck in the nine to five rut to steal a valuable statuette from a rich guy in Buenos Aries for a ruthless black market art dealer Mr. Ellington (Forrest Whitaker). The thieves botch the delivery of the object to Los Angeles and Mr. Ellington forces them to come up with a million dollars by the end of the week or he will have them executed. The desperate group of amateur thieves concoct a plan where they all take out one million dollar polocies out on themselves. Consequently, if one dies, the other will collect and pay off Mr. Ellington. The rest of the movie unfolds as these friends figure out who will be the victim and who will be the killer.
