Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Vatel
The drama unfolds at the chateau of a debt-ridden nobleman, who is looking for a handout from Louis Quatorze, aka the Sun King. The nobleman stages a three-day celebration for His Majesty, in the desperate hope of re-establishing his formerly lofty place at court.

At the helm of this gala is Vatel (Gerard Depardieu), the nobleman's steward. While Vatel is a whiz in the kitchen, he doesn't like having to kowtow to the dissolute royal entourage. To make matters worse, Vatel and the king's tres jolie mistress du jour (Uma Thurman)fall for each other. Their relationship incites jealousy in the king's chief toadie (played to perfection by Tom Roth), who cooks up a scheme to expose their affair and ruin Vatel.
