| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Competition |
Richard Dreyfuss plays aging piano player Paul Dietrich in this movie about winning the super bowl of piano competitions. After failing to win a small competition in Cincinatti Paul debates his future as a piano player with his father who is proud of his son's talent. Paul explains to him that this is his last shot and that if he fails he will take a job teaching. His father convinces him to go to San Francisco and play in the biggest of all competitions. Once there, Paul falls in love with a young piano virtuoso Heidi Joan Schoonover (Amy Irving). We watch as Paul and Heidi's relationship goes on an emotional roller coaster as they struggle with each other and the realities of winning and losing the competition.
