| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Who Is Cletis Tout? |
Christian Slater stars as Trevor Allen Finch, a con artist mixed up in a tough predicament with the police and the mob. The movie starts almost at the end with movie obsessed hitman Critical Jim (Tim Allen) capturing the fugitive Finch. Then the plot unfolds in long flashback style as Finch tells his story to Critical Jim who breaks everything down in three act movie style.
While in prison Finch meets up with magician Micah Donnelly (Richard Dreyfuss) who pulled off a diamond heist twenty years previously and buried the treasure by a tree. They plan to break out of jail and Micah uses the same trick he used to pull the diamond heist; a blast of smoke and a camera showing his image.
They break out of jail and get to New York City where Finch calls up his old buddy Dr. Savian (Billy Connolly) who owed Finch for keeping him out of jail. This guy brings cash and everything they need to change their identities. Finch becomes Cletis Tout, a photo journalist who got in trouble with the mafia and was killed.
At this point Tess (Portia De Rossi) comes to visit her father Micah. They plan to go find the diamonds together when the mafia comes back into the picture. They find out through a nosey neighbor that Cletis Tout is still alive. But he isn't, it's Finch being Tout. The mafia shoots up Tess's pottery place and kills Micah. Finch/Clout falls in love with Tess as they search to find the diamonds which happen to be inside the grounds of a minimum security prison. The rest of the movie unfolds as Finch/Clout gets the diamonds out of prison and deal with Critical Jim, the mafia and the police.
